The Founders
The following is a list of those who may be considered the "founders" of our Society - those whose work and enthusiasm contributed mainly to its establishment, objectives and early growth. It has been compiled from a number of sources, including:
- the minutes of the first meeting;
- a list of the first executive;
- those who signed the petition for letters patent (not all of whom had any real connection with the Society);
- and those who attended the inaugural dinner on October 25, 1966.
A number of those who lent their names to the endeavour did not subsequently contribute otherwise and some, conversely, whose names are absent from the earliest lists, were among the most energetic workers behind the scenes. No such list can be perfect. However, the present one has been checked over - and in a few cases amended by - a number of the surviving founding members, among whom there was virtually unanimous agreement with the content of the list. It is compiled at this time to celebrate the Society's attainment of the "Royal" designation - of which our founders would certainly have been proud - at a time when there are still a few who can remember the earliest days of the Heraldry Society of Canada. Let their names be remembered.
Below are displayed a few old photos of some of the founders donated to the Society by Mrs. Beddoe. Click on any of the images to view a larger image of the same.
