Gear Wheel Fleet Maintenance Facility, Cape Breton The gear wheel (a steel wheel with squared projections on its outer edge) is often used to refer to persons or institutions associated with mechanical engineering (see also cog wheel, for which it is a synonym).
German Shepherd Dog Connell, E.B., Vol II, P 226 The German Shepherd Dog (sometimes called the Alsatian) is a large-sized working dog originating in Germany. It was originally used to herd sheep. However, because of its strength, intelligence and obedience, it has more recently been used for other tasks, especially in search-and-rescue, police and military roles.

Great Horned Owl University of Alberta. Vol II, P 329 The Great Horned Owl is an owl native to the Americas. It is often associated – as here – with the idea of wisdom. Its nocturnal activities may also allude to long hours of study.
Greek Helmet Town of Ajax, ON., Vol III, P 348 The Greek Helmet refers to HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy cruiser (famous for its part in the Battle of the River Plate during the Second World War) for which the town was named.
Greek Warrior Argonaut Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. Vol IV, P 174 The name Argonaut refers to the warriors on the ship of Jason, the mythical searcher for the Golden Fleece. The leadership of Jason and his perseverance in attaining his goal, are qualities aimed for in the training of this summer camp.
Green-backed Heron Village of Rockcliffe Park. Vol II, P 333 The Green-backed Heron (shown here as the sinister supporter) is a relatively small North American heron, living in marshes or along rivers and creeks. In these arms, it alludes to the marshy edge of the Ottawa River that borders the village, now part of Ottawa.
Grist Mill Municipalité de Frelighsburg, Que., Vol V, P 56 The mill recalls the first flour and saw mills of the late 18th century that were economic pillars of Quebec at the time.
Grizzly Bear (Natural) 41 Canadian Brigade Group, (Badge) Vol III, P 402 The Grizzly Bear is a creature of western North American, related to the brown bear. It here suggests aggression as well as fierce protection of its young.

Gunstone Village of New Maryland, New Brunswick The gunstone is an ancient and rather obscure term for the Sable roundel, more commonly known as the pellet.
Gyrafalcon De Weerdt, M. , Vol II, P 357 The Gyrfalcon is the largest of the falcon species. It breeds – and mostly lives – on the arctic coasts and islands of North America, Europe and Asia, nesting on cliff faces. It was for centuries a favoured hunting bird of the Vikings. It is the Territorial bird of the Northwest Territories.
