Blazon: Azure, issuant from barry of four Argent and Vert in base, a demi-lion Or, supporting a spear issuant of the second.
Significance: The badge is that of HMS VANGUARD. Vanguard is one of the oldest names in the Royal Navy, a distinction which is brought out in the badge design. The lion with a spear is derived from the figureheads of the old royal ships of the line, which invariably had a lion in some form. The stripes in the lower part of the badge do not indicate water, but instead are an allusion to the Elizabethan naval ensign, which was mostly green and white horizontal stripes, and commemorates VANGUARD's actions against the Spanish Armada as a fleet flagship.
