Blazon: Azure, on the sun radiant Or a killer whale leaping proper.
Significance: Maquinna was a famous chief of the Nootka tribe who was the natural son of a shipwrecked Spanish sailor and a highborn Nootka woman. He brought his tribe to a position of dominance in the area and promoted peace with the white explorers. In the badge, the killer whale signifies the Nootka tribe, often known as the people of the killer whale. The sun symbolizes Maquinna, which means "sun Chief" in the Nootka language. It also alludes to British Columbia, whose arms include the sun on a blue field.
