Blazon: Gules, a female head facing to the sinister and couped at the neck Argent, wearing a diadem and necklace Or, after the fashion of a Greek vase painting representing the nymph Calypso.
Significance: The badge is that of HMS CALYPSO. Calypso is a character in the Odyssey of Homer. She is the nymph who shelters the hero Odysseus (Ulysses) in a cave after he is washed ashore on her island of Ogygia. Calypso falls in love with Odysseus and keeps him with her for seven years, but finally gives in to his pleas to be allowed to return to his home in the island of Ithaca and to his wife Penelope. The head of Calypso is taken from a vase painting. She is shown facing to the sinister side of the field to indicate her sadness at giving up her lover.
