Arms in Norway are in general not granted but assumed. Granted arms and assumed arms have co-existed in Norway for centuries and the majority are assumed. Norway offers protective registration of arms only for municipalities for counties and for state heraldry (including the military).
These arms are assumed on the basis of an armorial seal on a letter dated 1776 from a paternal ancestor to the Royal (Norwegian) Society of Sciences; the letter is registered in the collections of the University Library of Trondheim. Since the arms are only known from seals Mr Sidselrud chose the tinctures during the process of turning the armorial seal into a coat-of-arms proper.
The right to bear these arms is given to those descendants of Mr Sidselrud's great-grandfather Ole Michael Sidselrud who bear the family name and to other descendants with permission from the head of the oldest agnatic branch of the family. Kaare Olaf Seeberg Sidselrud is the oldest descendant in the direct male line from Ole Michael.
The present arms have been in use since 1998. They have been registered by the Scandinavian Roll of Arms Foundation (Skandinavisk Vapenrulla) with the registration number SVR 634/2003. They have also been registered with the Bureau of Heraldry in South Africa with certificate number 3743 dated October 7th 2010 on the basis of notarized documents from the Norwegian National Registry and the Norwegian National Archives.
