Alan Brookman Beddoe, OC, OBE, OStJ, FRHSC

Lieutenant-Commander Beddoe was born in Ottawa in June 1893. He died in Blackburn Hamlet, Ontario on 2 December, 1975.

He was educated at Ashbury College, Ottawa and except for his service in the Grerat War, lived in the Ottawa area his entire life. In August 1914 he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, C.E.F., proceeded overseas with that unit in October and in Apriol 1915 was captured at the Second Battle of Ypres at the time of the gas atack. A prisoner of war in Germany for several years, he was eventually repatriated through Switzerland where he met his future wife, Marguerite Charrier, an International Red Cross worker, who suvives him.

During the Second World War he first enlisted in the Governor General's Foot Guards reserve battalion, becoming a corporal. Later he was commissioned in the Royal Canadian

Naval Volunteer Reserve and attached to the Naval Staff in Ottawa.

His artistic and heraldic ability is best known through his great work on the Books of Remembrance in the Peace Tower. He also was involved in the creation of Canada's Maple Leaf Flag, designed the Royal Canadian Legion's badge and the badges of over 180 of Canada's Second World War naval vessels. In 1957 he was given the task of redesigning the Royal Arms of Canada to bring them into line with modern artistry.

Founder of The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada/La Société Heraldique du Canada, he was created the first Fellow of that Society a few weeks before his death. He was already an Honorary Fellow of the Heraldry Society of Australia and a Fellow of the Heraldry Society of New Zealand.

Among the many Coats of Arms which he designed for municipalities and institutions are those of the cities of Ottawa and Kingston. His designs won easy approval at the College of Arms and the Court of the Lord Lyon. Some years ago, Alan Beddoe's services to heraldry in Canada were honoured by a special, gratuitous grant of personal Arms by the then Garter Principal King of Arms, Sir George Bellew.
