Blazon: Gules, a bend wavy Argent charged with two like ribands Azure, debruised with a cross of the second charged with an emperor penguin erect proper.
Significance: The badge is that of HMCS TERRA NOVA. The wavy white and blue diagonal stripe refers to the Terra Nova River in Newfoundland, after which the ship was named. The white cross on a red background is derived directly from the arms of the province. The penguin is from the badge of HMS SCOTT, which ship commemorates Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the famous Antarctic explorer and commander of the original Terra Nova. This famous ship was not in fact a naval vessel, but was a Scottish whaler under charter to the Royal Navy for purposes of exploration. Commanded by Captain Scott from 1903 to 1913, she was the ship that carried him and his party on their gallant but tragic expedition to the South Pole. The Canadian ship carries the penguin in her badge in commemoration of Scott's association with the name.
