Blazon: Azure, within a representation of the wampum of the Iroquois Nation, another of the head of the mace used at the sitting of the first parliament of Upper Canada in 1792, both proper.
Significance: The badge is that of HMCS ONONDAGA. This design displays a representation of the wampum of the Iroquois League, of which the Onondagas were the central tribe and known as the Keepers of the Wampum. The latter -- made primarily of cowrie shells -- is symbolic of the original founding of the League in 1580 and has been handed down through a line of hereditary custodians, all of the Onondaga tribe. The mace head is an indirect reference to the schooner ONONDAGA, a vessel of H.M. Provincial Marine on Lake Ontario, which had a part in the convening of the first Parliament of Upper Canada at Newark in 1792, and also in the founding of York (now Toronto) in 1793.
