Blazon: Sable, a caduceus Or from the head thereof issuing three lightning bolts Argent, pointing to the dexter, middle and sinister chief respectively.
Significance: The lower figure with a winged staff and two serpents is known as the "caduceus". Despite a common misconception to the contrary, this has nothing to do with medicine but is the emblem of the god Hermes or Mercury. Hermes, as the messenger of the gods, is traditionally regarded as the god of communications. The three lightning bolts issuing from the top of the caduceus symbolize electricity and the whole represents the idea of wireless telegraphy, the invention for which Marconi is famous.
