Blazon: Argent, three ribands wavy Azurem, over all a crescent Sable debruised by an Indian fish spearhead Gules, bound around the hilt with thongs Argent.
Significance: The badge is that of HMS KOOTENY. The Kootenay Indians from whom the river derives its name depended largely on fish caught in the river and the buffalo hunted on the lower slopes of the foothills. In the badge design, the three blue diagonal wavy bars represent the Kootenay River. The black crescent resembles the horns of the buffalo, while the fish spearhead is typical of the kind used by the Indians.
