Blazon: Per chevron engrailed Azure and Argent, in chief an estoile Or and at the nombril point a maple leaf Gules.
Significance: J.E.Bernier was a famous arctic explorer and cartographer who in 1908 was commissioned by the Canadian government to conduct a survey of the arctic islands. Up to this point, Canada had shown little interest in her arctic waters, whose exploration had be performed mainly by American, British and European parties, leaving some doubt as to Canada's claim to ownership. Bernier, as the first official government surveyor of the area, in effect solidified Canada's claim to sovereignty of the arctic archipelago. The badge design shows a scalloped white area on a blue background, symbolizing an icy coast. The star represents the North Star which guided the explorations and the maple leaf signifies the Canadian sovereignty that Bernier established.
