Blazon: Gules, an eastern crown proper above two ropes issuant from the flanks and knotted at the nombril point with a boatswain's knot Or.
Significance: The name of the corps commemorates the great steamship GREAT EASTERN, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1858 -- the largest ship of her time for over forty years. Her most famous accomplishment was the laying of the Transatlantic Cable in 1866 from Heart's Content, Newfoundland (on Trinity Bay, and not far from New Harbour) to Valentia, Ireland. The badge design shows a crown, known heraldically as an "Eastern Crown," of a type worn by great eastern potentates and thus alluding to the name. The knotted ropes symbolize the joining of two continents by the transatlantic cable.
