RCSCC EFFIE M. MORRISSEY
Blazon: | Argent, on a pile reversed dancette Azure, a lozenge per fess Gules and Argent, the upper portion fimbriated of the last. |
Significance: | Effie M. Morrissey was the reinforced auxiliary schooner used for arctic exploration and charting by the famous Newfoundland ice skipper Bob Bartlett. Built in 1894, she is still afloat. In the badge the indented white area signifies ice, while the blue area represents a lead of the sea. The lozenge-shaped figure carries multiple symbolism. In one sense it represents the ship itself, driving a passage through the ice. The lozenge shape is the heraldic symbol for a woman, indicating that the ship bore a woman's name. The red and white colours of the lozenge and its shape also suggest a compass needle, something that constantly seeks the north as the Morrissey did. |
