Blazon: Or, the upper body of a male Beothic Indian, couped at the waist, supporting with his dexter hand a ceremonial staff and holding in his sinister a funereal canoe model, all Proper.
Significance: The Beothics were the original "red indians", the term being derived from the practice of colouring their clothing and themselves with red ochre. They were hunted to extinction by the white settlers and Micmac Indians. The staff and oddly-shaped canoe were unique artefacts of the tribe. The canoe model (used in Beothic burials) symbolizes the death of the tribe.
